How ‘Bout Them Apples!

If you’re an iPhone user then it’s pretty hard to ignore the new U2 album that’s been automatically added to your iTunes playlist. A lot of people were surprised, and unhappy, when they saw something they didn’t ask for staring them in the face.

From what I’ve read it sounds like Apple paid an undetermined amount to the band, and its record label, and part of the payment includes $100 million worth of marketing. Wow!

live in potential

It’s hard to say how this campaign is going so far but there seems to be a lot of negativity on the social platforms and from a personal point of view I just don’t know how I feel about someone force feeding me something that I didn’t ask for.

Of course the point of any marketing campaign is to get create a buzz and get people people talking so it seems like on that level they’ve done a good job but at what expense. When you start making decisions for people, and more importantly remind them that you’re in control of their most personal accessory, it’s easy to rub people the wrong way and send them spinning in the other direction.

It will be be interesting to see how this one plays out over the next few weeks and to see just how far companies will go with this type of in your face mentality. Apple may have called this a ‘gift’ but I call it a rude awakening.

If this is any indication of the future then we’re definitely in for a roller coaster ride!
